You can’t take the skies from me

Posted in Media on June 24th, 2004

Yes! The official website is now live for the upcoming movie Serenity based on Joss Whedon’s (now defunct) Firefly television series.

Join the Browncoats and earn points good for movie swag? Why the hell not. Earn more points by shamelessly plugging the movie in my blog? Do I hafta? (I will however draw the line at sending invite emails to my pals, for the sake of saving them from spam inundations.)

(Of course, the bastard who was smart enough to make the /. post is rolling in points right now.)

So, if you’re of a mind, feel free to click the hell out of the above link and earn me movie swag.

The death of radio?

Posted in Media on June 11th, 2004

The HoustonChronicle.com reports that the record industries have finally found a way to resurrect the payolla scandals of early Rock & Roll.

In a strange twist, it seems that it was the radio station’s idea this time around. We know it is illegal to pay a station to play a song on it’s own; however, if they play it as an advertisment ( “And now, Avril Lavigne’s Don’t Tell Me, presented by Arista Records.”) it is perfectly legal.

The upshot of this is that it completely invalidates the Top 40 charts, since they only count the number of times a song is played. This method, even though it’s paid for, counts as a play. With the amount of late-night and early-morning airtime available at low rates, this allows record companies to seriously skew a song’s rating using ad-plays.

Just one more reason the music industry sucks.

You want my opinion? Go check out GarageBand.Com and hear some new music from small bands for free.

Baaaaa!

45 out of 100. Not bad, I suppose, but that means the thousand or so other movies I’ve seen weren’t on there, and I think maybe should have been. (With the exception of nine-tenths of the indie flicks my ex wife made me watch. I figure she owes me about 150 hours of my life back for those.)

When it comes down to preferences, they are:

  • Caper / Crime movies
  • Science Fiction
  • Action movies (Provided they have witty dialog)
  • Now, with that in mind, can you predict my top five movies? Winner gets a prize!
