The (not-so-great) Debate

Posted in Politics on September 30th, 2004

Tonight I watched the Bush v. Kerry debate, and I have to say, I was pretty unimpressed with Bush’s performance. The main topic tonight was foreign policy, although some domestic policies were touched on briefly.

The first ten minutes of the debate seemed alot more to me like the debate management playing directly to Bush, and Bush himself seemed to be merely speechifying. As the debate moved forward, the questions (thankfully) grew more serious. Unfortunately, so did Bush’s inability to speak. He spent the entire debate hemming and hawing, stuttering, and falling back on silence while he scrambled to come up with a response.

Senator Kerry, on the other hand, was on the ball. He came off as much more prepared, more sure of himself, and just generally in control. I also liked his answers alot more than the President’s, but I had expected that going in. He was at a disadvantage prior to this mainly because the people haven’t heard exactly where he stands on some of the issues, and tonight he explained that he has plans for Iraq, he has plans to deal with North Korea specificaly and nuclear (not nucular) proliferation in general.

Both candidates made some veiled (or maybe not so veiled) attacks against the other, but Bush came out the loser there. Kerry kept his temper and his composure, so his comments were more simple criticisms than attacks. Bush, on the other hand, repeatedly went back on how “the Commander In Chief can’t say this is the wrong war at the wrong time.” Over and over again. Evry time Bush went there, Kerry came back saying he thought the war was started too soon, that Bush jumped the gun and didn’t go through all the diplomatic chanels before launching the attacks on Iraq. Now that we were in the war, however, he would support our war effort, and get this situation resolved as quickly as possible, perhaps even being able to start bringing troops home within 6 months.

End result? The CBS News team had 200 ‘fence sitters’ watching the debate from their homes across the country and using a WebTV device to rate the debate in real time. The highest rating point received was given to Kerry while outlining some of his 4-year plan, while the lowest rating went to Bush while he was hemming and hawing. According to these folks, Kerry won the debate, and as of right now 50% of those folks said they would be voting for Kerry, 20% sang for Bush, and the remaining 30% were still undecided.

Me? I’m still voting for Kerry, now I just feel better about doing it. Before tonight, I was voting for Kerry as the only way to get Bush out of office. Now, I think the Senator might actualy do a decent job of it.

Damn! You know you’re getting old when you really start taking politics seriously…

You want fries with that?

I think I have to admit now that the chances of me getting an industry job are too goddamn slim to mention. Time to go grab myself a McJob and pray for something better to eventually come along.

So, if you’re hiring, you know how to find me. Just about anything other than hard labor at this point. (I’d do that, but my knees and wrists wouldn’t take it for long.) My non-industry job history includes washing dishes, flipping burgers, pumping gas, running a deli and some light carpentry.

This kinda shit just really pisses me off. Here I am, an IQ close to 140, a decent education and a ton of skills and I can’t find a fucking job because the economy went to shit. Our glorious president has granted tax cuts to companies who ship jobs overseas and refuses to acknowledge the fact that he is in that office to serve the people, not the corporations and has no fucking regard whatsoever for the poor schmucks like me who just want to go to work every day and earn a living wage. I don’t need to be rich, I just need to feed my kids, pay my bills and got out to dinner a couple times a month. Is that too much to fucking ask?

So, while I’m not above taking charity, I’d much rather work for it. Support your local Techie From Hell: break a computer. Back up all of your data first, then just right-click on your antivirus tray icon and select ‘disable’. Now, open up Internet Exploder and do a websearch for pr0n – that should do the trick.

Open mouth…

Once again, commenter Casey has gone completely off the mark. To wit:

Comparing gay marriage to inter-racial marriage is not only ignorant, it’s offensive to people of color like myself. Banning inter-racial marriages was wrong not because it was unfair to people who wanted to marry across ethnic lines, but because ethnicity is an inherent, genetic characteristic trait that cannot be discriminated against by definition of the Constitution.

Homosexuality, however, doesn’t enjoy such a luxury. There is no such thing as a gay gene. There is no such thing as being born gay. Contrary to what you might read in Willamette Week or the Mercury, being gay is not an inherent, genetic characteristic. It’s a result of nurture and environmental factors.

Casey was had some serious thoughts about my “No on 36” stance, and I felt I should bring them out here for a little discussion.

You make some good points, but you should look at the larger picture. Let me explain:

What is the basis upon which homosexuality hangs its hat? It’s the assumption that being gay is a natural predisposition to being attracted to the same sex. Okay, whether you agree or disagree is irrelevant. But if we say that it’s okay for homosexuals to marry based upon this predisposition, what do we say to someone who says they’re predisposed to being attracted to children? How about someone who says they have a predisposition to a group of people? After all, they were born that way, right? Well, maybe so, maybe not. But we’re talking about what our Constitution should say about being the best marriage institution for Oregon. Read on…

Last word

I’ve seen alot of bumper stickers and posters going both ways on the subject, and I thought I’d officially voice my opinion one last time.

In 40 days, Oregonians will have the opportunity to vote on the adoption of Constitutional Amendment 36, which would once and for all define ‘marriage’ as a “one man, one woman” situation, I.E., no same-sex marriages or other spousal recognition for same-sex couples in our state Constitution.

Read on for my opinion. Read the rest of this entry »

Points for Arnold

Posted in Politics on September 23rd, 2004

Being that I don’t live in California, I haven’t had much of an opinion about how ‘Herr Gropenfuhrer’ is doing as a Governor, but today I can say ‘well done!’

I heard on the news that Arnie has vetoed a bill that would allow illegal immigrants to obtain a Cali driver’s license. His reasoning behind the veto is that a DL is a gateway document that leads to other forms of ID. Much like some researchers say marijuana use leads to more serious drugs, a DL is often used as legal ID for obtaining other forms of ID, which can lead to an immigrant being granted jobs or services normally reserved for true citizens.

Arnold has quite effectively said “look at me and where I am today. I am an immigrant to this great nation, and have made it all the way to Governor. You too can work for and achieve this accomplishment, but you have to go through proper channels and procedure.

Good work, Mr. Governor.

Take one for your country

Posted in Politics on September 10th, 2004

Ran across a couple interesting sites this morning urging folks to take one for your country.

The first is Fuck The Vote, which urges people to help keep Bush from a second term by trading sexual favors for a non-Bush vote this November. From the website:

At Fuck The Vote we provide a Pledge Sheet that can be used conveniently before becoming physically intimate with a conservative. The Pledge Sheet asks the signee to make a promise to vote for anyone but George Bush in the November election. FTV has not endorsed a single candidate but recommends strategic voting. We also encourage FTV fans to take road trips this summer to swing(er) states to collect pledges. If you collect a pledge let us know about it on the Swinger States page! Have safe fun fucking over Bush while fucking for votes.

A noble project indeed, and one I can get fully behind (or in front of, as the case may be!) Just remember folks, that “anyone other than Bush” has a chance of fragmenting the vote – you really should pick a candidate that has a chance of winning. Unfortunately, that means Kerry. I know, the choices suck AGAIN this year.

The second site is aimed at just getting more people to vote, by pledging to have sex with a voter on election day and/or withold sex from non-voters for at least a week after election day. To earn “American Hero” status, one would withold sex from non-voters for a period of 4 years. Votergasm has this to say:

# Pledge-fulfilling sex must be consensual, legal, and generous. And safe. And hot.
# Acceptable sexual positions include, but are not limited to: missionary, doggy-style, cowgirl, reverse cowgirl, leapfrog, butterfly, humpback whale, cling wrap, squashing of the deck chair, accordion, reverse piggy-back, advanced (“twin”) leapfrog. Male-male, female-female, group, and oral variations of these positions can also be used to satisfy the pledge.

# “Cybersex” does not satisfy the pledge, dorkwad.

# Achievement of a Votergasm during election-night sex is probable, but not guaranteed. Those encountering difficulty reaching Votergasm are encouraged to slow things down, talk about it, and reduce the pressure. Other techniques include the use of massage oils, toys, “dirty talk,” “ballot stuffing,” and “exit polls.”
# Per the U.S. Constitution, children conceived on election night are eligible for gigantic interest-free loans from the U.S. government, and special t-shirt

There you have it folks – get out there and persuade some voters!

Up on my soapbox

Posted in Politics on August 29th, 2004

TheIowaChannel.com reports that there is a PUBLIC school in Marshalltown, Iowa that is part of a ‘pilot program’ that teaches children in English for half the day and Spanish the other half. They recently rejected the application of a second-grade girl because she doesn’t speak any Spanish.

That’s right, boys and girls, this is a public school, supposed to be open to all citizens of the appropriate age.

I don’t know about you, but I’m getting a little tired of the way this country has been stomping all over itself in the mad rush to coddle immigrants. I’m tired of seeing official mail from my son’s school and government offices written in languages other than English.. I nearly blew my freaking top when I heard the government officially recognize “ebonics” as a language. (If you listen closely folks, it’s badly pronounced and mongrelized English. Mangled to hell, but English. Kinda like that crap they speak up in the Ozarks and New England.)

I’m tired of seeing skilled jobsets outsourced overseas because it’s cheaper. Like mine. I’m tired of going to the unemployment office because of this and seeing a line of folks who barely speak English collecting checks. And I am REALLY tired of listening to immigrants say how things were so much better in the Old Country. If it was so much better, then why are you still fucking here?

You know why it’s cheaper to outsource? Because the rest of the world doesn’t have to pay six times to print all of it’s documentation in six different languages. Because the rest of the world doesn’t fall all over itself to put immigrants on welfare within ten minutes of them crossing the border. Because the rest of the world requires their immigrants to actually work for a fucking living. And you can be damn sure that you will not find employment overseas unless you speak the fucking language – and I mean more than just “where’s the bathroom.” Yeah, many of them speak English as a second language, but you still won’t get a job unless you can speak their language like your first.

This Nation was built by people who couldn’t make it work wherever they came from. The walls at Ellis Island alone could tell stories for the next hundred years about folks who immigrated here with nothing but the clothes on their backs, and history shows us that they got off their asses and worked like hell to make it work – and they did. They built a helluva Nation.

Now, they don’t have to work for it. We put ’em on the dole. We hire bilingual people to teach their children for them. We give them discounts on their housing costs. We have entire sections of government and private sector in place to make America feel like home for them. Not a new home, rather they try to make it feel like the one they just left. One wonders how many billions of dollars in taxpayer money we could save if we simply said “you must speak English in America. If you don’t want to learn the language, hire your own fucking translator.”

My question is this: who turned off the burner under the melting pot? We’re not making stew here anymore, folks – we’re just washing vegetables.

The politics of Star Trek

I was reading this over at Frizzen Sparks, and one of the comments got me to thinking. The commentor stated that ants, bees and the Borg are socialist, but this is wrong: they are hive minds with the queen as dictator. He wasn’t too far off the mark though, since in ST:TNG, they opennly proclaim that they have no need of money, that each individual’s needs are taken care of, freeing them all to work for the betterment of mankind.

Yup. Socialists.

War On Pornography

Posted in Politics on July 22nd, 2004

“”…an alliance of “several U.S. and Canadian organizations” that announced a “War On Pornography” campaign in Utah yesterday….””

Meaning the thing most likely has the backing of the Mormon church, and I’ll do my part to undermine any church-based social lawmaking. Just doing my bit to enforce the seperation of Church and State.
